Real Salt Lake rolls to 3-0 win over New York

Aug 7, 2011 - 5:38 AM Sandy, UT (Sports Network) - Since the calendar changed over to May, Red Bull New York has been a mere mortal in Major League Soccer.

Real Salt Lake proved that once again Saturday night.

Nat Borchers and 17-year-old Luis Gil scored in the opening half and Real Salt Lake defeated New York, 3-0, at Rio Tinto Stadium.

New York (6-6-12) started the season with four wins and two draws in its first seven matches, but has just two wins since and is 2-5-10 in its last 17 games.

Real Salt Lake (10-5-6) rebounded from consecutive losses to the Columbus Crew and Sporting Kansas City with its 10th win of the season.

"After giving away two games like we did ..., I think we got our heads down a little bit," Borchers said. "We knew we had to come out with some energy ... and we really just wanted to improve from how we've been playing.

"I'm really happy with the result and the three points are so big at this point of the season."

RSL wasted no time establishing its dominance, as Kyle Beckerman's corner kick found an open Borchers on the edge of the six-yard box, and Borchers headed to the left side in the 13th minute to leave New York goalie Frank Rost no shot.

Borchers' second goal of the season held until the final minute of the opening half, and Gil added to the advantage when he unleashed a bullet into the lower right for his first MLS goal.

Beckerman, who was recently called into the U.S. national team, again assisted on the second goal, but Gil did most of the work with a nice lone-range blast.

Rost was forced to leave the match at halftime due to injury and backup goalie Bouna Coundoul was under less pressure in the second half but still was unable to prevent another goal.

New York's Roy Miller played the ball with his arm inside the area, and Alvaro Saborio converted to the lower right in the 77th minute past a diving Coundoul for his sixth goal of the season.

Real Salt Lake has the fifth highest point total in MLS - and is fifth in the Western Conference - despite playing fewer games than the four teams with more points.

New York and its stars, Thierry Henry and Rafael Marquez, remained level with Sporting in third in the East, and are just three points clear of sixth-place D.C. United. Only the top three are guaranteed playoff spots.

"We had a very weak performance, I must say. I don't think I've seen us that weak before in one-and-a-half years," New York coach Hans Backe said.

"It's sloppy, it's very, very sloppy. We just need to change things if we're going to reach the playoffs."
