Dixon scores last-second goal to lift Houston past RSL

Aug 21, 2011 - 3:02 AM Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Dynamo's Alex Dixon sure picked a great time to score his first Major League Soccer goal.

With the Dynamo locked in a 2-2 tie with Real Salt Lake at Robertson Stadium on Saturday, Dixon entered the match as a substitute in the 81st minute, and with the final kick of the game, he curled a left-footed shot inside the post from 20 yards to win the match.

Fabian Espindola scored the lone goal of the first half for RSL, but a goal in the opening minutes of the second half from Brian Ching leveled the contest for Houston.

Luis Gil then put the visitors back in front before Bobby Boswell nodded home a corner kick with 20 minutes to play to pull the Dynamo level once more, setting the stage for Dixon's heroics in the dying seconds.

The 3-2 win extends Houston's unbeaten streak to five games and moves the club to within five points of the top spot in the Eastern Conference, held by the Columbus Crew.

Jason Kreis' side, meanwhile, has dropped four of its last five games and is now winless in 19 fixtures in the state of Texas all-time.

Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando was called upon early to make a save on Ching, while defender Tony Beltran cleared Je-Vaughn Watson's rebound attempt off the goal line.

Houston was on the front foot in the opening 25 minutes but fell behind when Fabian Espindola got in behind the Houston defense on the right and drove a low shot inside the far post.

The hosts pulled the goal back in the 47th minute when Brad Davis danced past two defenders and laid the ball off to Ching, who easily deposited it into the net from 10 yards.

Espindola turned provider on the hour mark when his cross was headed home by Gil, but Houston had another answer as Boswell was on hand at the near post to redirect the ball past Rimando with his head from Davis' corner kick.

Davis rolled a shot just wide in the 90th minute, but Dixon sent all the Dynamo fans home happy with a memorable first goal in MLS.
