Le Toux scores again as Union tie Sporting
Sep 24, 2011 - 2:54 AM Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Sebastien Le Toux scored in the 63rd minute for his seventh goal in his last seven matches and the Philadelphia Union tied Sporting Kansas City, 1-1, on Friday night at Livestrong Sporting Park.Omar Bravo opened the scoring in the 56th minute, but Le Toux responded within 10 minutes as the Union earned a share of the points and tightened the Eastern Conference title race in Major League Soccer.
Kansas City (10-9-11) climbed even on points with the Columbus Crew for first, and Philadelphia (9-7-13) is just one point behind. Kansas City plays Columbus on Wednesday in its next game, and Philadelphia plays D.C. United on Thursday.
The Union snapped an eight-game winless skid last week with a 1-0 win over the Crew, as Le Toux scored the lone goal. Le Toux nearly handed the Union a quick lead at Kansas City, but fired wide left less than 2 minutes into the game.
Kei Kamara headed just over the bar with five minutes left in the opening half on Kansas City's best scoring chance through 45 minutes and the match reached halftime scoreless.
Bravo opened the scoring 11 minutes after half when he sneaked around Gabriel Farfan at the right post to reach Kamara's cross and drove a first-time effort past 20-year-old Union goalie Zac MacMath for his ninth goal of the season.
But Kansas City couldn't hold the lead, and settled for its sixth home draw of the season and a tie for first place.
After K.C. goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen denied Jack McInerney in the 59th, Michael Farfan helped erase his brother's bad defending when he hustled to keep a ball alive on the end line, then slipped a pass back to an open Le Toux.
Le Toux fired into the net from six yards with Nielsen out of position and his eighth goal of the season was enough to earn a draw on the road, the fifth for the Union this season away from home
MacMatch made another fine save on C.J. Sapong to preserve the draw, as Philly has turned an eight-game skid into a four-game unbeaten streak (three ties and a win).
Kansas City has just one win in its last five, with a 1-2-2 record during that stretch.
