N.Y. edges Dallas to advance to Western Conference semifinals
Oct 27, 2011 - 3:38 AM Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - Red Bull New York showed no signs of a club that backed its way into the playoffs, as it pulled off an impressive 2-0 win at FC Dallas to kick off the 2011 MLS Cup playoffs.Joel Lindpere scored the game-winner in the 61st minute to see New York through to the Western Conference semifinal, where it will face the Los Angeles Galaxy in a home-and-away tie. Thierry Henry provided an insurance goal in stoppage time to put the win beyond any doubt.
Mehdi Ballouchy proved to be a super-sub for the Red Bulls, as head coach Hans Backe brought him into the match in 59th minute. Ballouchy made an immediate impact, assisting on Lindpere's goal two minutes later.
After a Lindpere shot from distance was parried by Kevin Hartman, Dane Richards collected the rebound and laid the ball off to Ballouchy who slid a pass in front of goal. Lindpere continued his run into the box and redirected the pass underneath a diving Hartman to score the telling goal.
New York had to grind out the result with one less player as Jan Gunnar Solli was sent off 11 minutes from time following a rash challenge on Daniel Hernandez. The Norwegian will miss Sunday's clash against the Galaxy.
But the red card was to be immaterial on the night, as Henry proceeded to secure the result deep into stoppage time with virtually the last kick of the ball. The French striker tracked down a long ball into the box before rounding Hartman and tucking it into an empty net.
With the win, New York will host Los Angeles at Red Bull Arena on Sunday before heading out to The Home Depot Center for the return leg on Nov. 3.
