United sets sights on top spot in East against Revs

May 25, 2012 - 3:54 PM Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - D.C. United has strung together successive wins for the second time this season, and can move atop the Eastern Conference on Saturday against the New England Revolution at RFK Stadium.

When United won consecutive matches in April, it snapped a three-year drought without back-to-back wins, so a second two-match winning streak in just over a month has revived the once proud franchise.

D.C. (7-4-3) disposed of Toronto FC for the second time this season, 3-1, last week at RFK to win claim its second win during a three-game home stand. Now, a second match against New England (4-6-1) stands between a third straight win.

Dwayne De Rosario scored twice against his former club and has five goals over his last six matches. But the 2011 league MVP was not as worried about his own stats as he was about the wins.

"Whether I'm scoring or not is not a big concern," De Rosario said. "Of course I like scoring, it's what I do, but I go to win.

"If it takes me scoring and stepping up, then I'll take the chance. But what's important is that we are playing as a team."

United has struggled for years, and its drought of four seasons without making the playoffs is the second-longest active streak in the league behind Toronto. Now, the four-time MLS Cup champions are on track for their first berth since 2007.

With a win at New England already to its credit this season, another win this weekend would move D.C. top of the standings on 27 points - just 21 less than the Philadelphia Union totaled to reach the playoffs last season.

New England (4-6-1) visits with five losses in six road games this season, and sits in the middle of the Eastern standings. Although it has been a good start for the Revolution after they accumulated just 28 points last year, the road woes are a concern.

New England has lost its last three road games.

The Revs are 13 points off the top ahead of the weekend, and 13 points off the bottom. New England managed a 2-2 draw against the Houston Dynamo last week as Saer Sene scored twice, but the home result was still a disappointment.

Coach Jay Heaps thought the team played well, but it needs to produce results.

"I don't think we played our absolute best, but we still had a chance to win the game. We did some things well, and some things not so well," Heaps said.

"All in all, I liked the way we fought at least - we competed - and one of the things going forward is I want to make this a tough place to play and I think we did that."

D.C. United, which is 5-1-2 at home this season, has done the same with RFK.
