FC Dallas seeks upset against San Jose

Sep 28, 2012 - 6:37 PM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - FC Dallas had just three wins in early July when its club-record winless skid reached 13 games, but coach Schellas Hyndman said this week he has a "dream" to be in the playoffs.

Just over two months ago, that was a nightmare scenario for Dallas. But with a win this weekend against the San Jose Earthquakes, the Hoops could move into a playoff spot.

Since starting the season just 3-9-7, which included the 13-match skid, Dallas has six wins and two draws in its last 11 games.

The winless run ended with a 0-0 draw against San Jose and Dallas (9-12-9) can move into fifth place in the Western Conference this week, if it can slay the best team in MLS on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

San Jose (18-6-6) has the best record in MLS and has the leading scorer in MLS in Chris Wondolowski.

Dallas lost its other trip to Buck Shaw, where the Earthquakes are unbeaten in 14 matches this season, but has won four of its last six - including a victory at Real Salt Lake and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Although Dallas also needs a little help from Seattle Sounders FC, which plays at Vancouver, a win would position the club well for the last three matches of the season. Vancouver holds the last playoff spot by just two points over FCD.

"I keep talking about - I have a dream," Hyndman said. "And the dream is to be in the playoffs. I think the guys all have a dream that we have four games and even though we're two points behind anything can happen in this league."

Dallas defeated Vancouver, 1-0, in its last match on Sept. 15 and was off last week, so it had plenty of time to prepare for San Jose. But with just a 3-9-2 road record, the odds are against the club.

The Earthquakes lead MLS with 60 points - five clear of its closest opponent - and defeated Seattle, 2-1, in their last match to extend their unbeaten streak to five games.

Wondolowski scored his 22nd goal in the victory as he remains within distance of the single-season scoring mark of 27, set by former D.C. United striker Roy Lassiter in 1996 - the first season of MLS.

"I expect more goals from him. I think Chris has a natural knack of scoring, whether it's Seattle or it's anywhere," San Jose Coach Frank Yallop said. "He loves being in the right spots and he gets something on the ball, usually."
