San Jose storms back in thrilling draw
Sep 30, 2012 - 4:51 AM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes have made a habit of scoring late in games this season.Saturday was no exception as Steven Lenhart scored the club's ninth second- half stoppage time goal of the season to salvage a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw with FC Dallas at Buck Shaw Stadium.
San Jose went in front when a cross from Marvin Chavez in the 24th minute was dummied by Chris Wondolowski and slotted home by an unmarked Alan Gordon.
The visitors were able to get on level terms eight minutes before halftime when Blas Perez collected a pass from Jackson, cut past his defender and slipped a shot past Jon Busch.
Perez put Dallas in front in the 72nd minute with a glancing header off of a cross from David Ferreira, but it was canceled out by a left-footed effort from Lenhart 10 minute later.
Matt Hedges thought he had claimed all three points for Dallas when he restored the club's lead two minutes from time, but Lenhart capped a dramatic finish when he headed home a flick from Gordon with virtually no time left.
San Jose (18-6-7) remains the favorite for the MLS Supporters' Shield by improving to 61 points on the season, while Dallas (9-12-10) stays two points shy of Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the hunt for the final playoff berth in the West.
