DCU heads to TFC with sights on postseason
Oct 5, 2012 - 10:04 PM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - D.C. United's playoff push continues on Saturday when it heads to BMO Field to take on lowly Toronto FC.United is unbeaten in its last four games, taking 10 points over that stretch to remain cemented to a playoff position.
The club has not yet clinched a postseason berth, but its position three points ahead of the cutoff with three games to go leaves Ben Olsen's men in a favorable position.
D.C. is coming off of a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers at Jeld-Wen Field last Saturday, the first of two consecutive road games.
"It's a long way and to come away with something is a positive especially with our road form this year," said Olsen. "It hasn't been stellar, but as of late we got a win and a tie on the road so, it's something to build on. We're in a heated race, some teams picked up some points on us, but in the standings it's a huge point."
The club took the lead against Portland but conceded an equalizer 11 minutes from time.
"I thought we gave them a lot of their chances, which is disappointing," said Olsen. "We have to find ways now to kill games off and we've done a pretty good job of that as of late, but it will help if we can find a way now to get the second [goal] when we do have the lead and teams are pushing."
Toronto has endured another miserable season, embodied by the club's dreadful 4-1 defeat to Red Bull New York at the weekend.
"It's been the worst season imaginable, to be honest," defender Richard Eckersley said. "We're simply not good enough for the minute and we want the season to end so we can regroup and start again next year, really."
The Canadian club brings an 11-game winless run into Saturday's clash, going 0-8-3 over that stretch to remain bottom of the Eastern Conference.
"It's probably the most frustrating thing is the talent is there, the ability," defender Darren O'Dea said. "It's all there. It's just becoming a team that can win games even you're not playing too well.
"It doesn't help when you've got your three DPs sitting injured. It doesn't help, we've had injuries and things but it happens in football. I think next season we'll be in a lot stronger position."
