John's late header leads FCD past 10-man Galaxy

Apr 14, 2013 - 1:52 AM Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - FC Dallas continued its surprising start to the MLS season by knocking off the Los Angeles Galaxy, 1-0, at FC Dallas Stadium on Saturday courtesy of George John's 87th-minute goal.

Both Kenny Cooper and Landon Donovan missed penalty kicks in an eventful second half, while the Galaxy was reduced to 10 men in the 60th minute when Leonardo was sent off.

Los Angeles looked poised to hold on for a point as the match entered the final five minutes, but a corner kick was headed off the crossbar by Eric Hassli, allowing John to score on the rebound.

Dallas has now won five of its first seven games to sit atop MLS, while the Galaxy lost for the first time in five league contests this term.

The match didn't really get going until the 60th minute when Leonardo received his marching orders for bringing down Blas Perez inside the penalty area.

Cooper stepped to the spot, but his low shot was kept out by goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, who dove to his right to stop the effort.

Despite playing down a man, the Galaxy had a great chance to take the lead as substitute Jose Villarreal was tripped inside the area by John in the 68th minute.

But it was then Donovan's turn to fail from the spot with goalkeeper Raul Fernandez diving to his left to parry the shot.

The home side continued to push for the win, and they were rewarded a few minutes from time with Hassli getting free at the near post to nod the ball off the crossbar, while John followed up to head home from a few yards.
