Streaking Sporting faces tough Galaxy test
Apr 19, 2013 - 8:13 PM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Sporting Kansas City puts a number of streaks on the line at The Home Depot Center on Saturday as the club tangles with the Los Angeles Galaxy.Sporting has won its last three games after securing a 1-0 victory at Red Bull New York on Wednesday, while the result continued a run of five straight clean sheets for goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.
Aurelien Collin scored the lone goal in the 13th minute of the hard-fought win, which was very important for Sporting ahead of a tough trip to the opposite coast to face the Galaxy.
"It was really our design to come in here and get the three points, because we know how hard it's going to be to go across the country and have the legs to play another tough 90 minutes against one of the top teams in the West," midfielder Benny Feilhaber told MLSsoccer.com after the win over New York. "We were able to get what we wanted here, and now that makes it that we can go into LA and play our game and try to pick up more points. It definitely gives us a boost."
The Galaxy is a team that could use a boost of its own as the club sustained its first defeat of the campaign last time out, a 1-0 setback against FC Dallas.
Los Angeles has managed just one goal in its last 270 minutes of play in all competitions, while Sporting hasn't yielded a goal in its last 519 minutes of action.
But despite those daunting numbers, Galaxy forward Landon Donovan feels his team is up for the challenge.
"They've been around together for a while now and they have a good goalkeeper and a good back four, but we like to think that we're a pretty good and dynamic attacking team," said Donovan. "So for us, it's a good challenge and we're looking forward to it."
After being involved in the CONCACAF Champions League and playing in Mexico against Monterrey, the Galaxy then traveled to FC Dallas for a road match, making this full week of preparation for Sporting a luxury.
"This feels foreign; it feels like we haven't had this in a while. I think we've only played two road games this year [in league play], but it feels like we've played 10," said Galaxy forward Mike Magee. "Going to Monterrey and we've had two lengthy trips, but it's great to get a full week and at the end of it, we have no excuses."
