Donovan helps Galaxy snap Sporting's streak
Apr 21, 2013 - 4:50 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Landon Donovan set up one goal and scored another as the Los Angeles Galaxy claimed a 2-0 win over Sporting Kansas City at The Home Depot Center on Saturday.Sporting entered the contest on a five-game unbeaten run, with all five of those matches ending in clean sheets.
But after 545 minutes without giving up a goal, Marcelo Sarvas finally cracked the Sporting defense with an assist from Donovan, who found the net himself in the 74th to secure the win.
After earning a victory in New York on Wednesday, Sporting looked a bit off the pace, and the Galaxy took advantage with some sharp first-half play.
Mike Magee called Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen into action with a volley after 10 minutes, while the best chance for the visitors came from a Graham Zusi free kick in the 20th minute which struck the crossbar.
It was a brief scare for the hosts, but they went back on the attack in the 27th minute and were rewarded for a nice counter-attack move.
Donovan got down the left wing and into the penalty area before rolling the ball to the front of the net for Sarvas, who applied the finishing touch from a few yards out.
Sporting continued to struggle in the final third and the Galaxy found a second goal in the 74th as Sarvas cleared a ball from the back that Robbie Keane collected.
He turned past a defender at midfield and raced in on goal, where he drew Nielsen off his line before squaring the ball to Donovan for a simple tap in.
Keane could have extended the lead twice in the final 15 minutes as he found himself in one-on-one situations with Nielsen, only to squander both chances badly.
