Seattle bounces back with Chivas defeat
Jun 2, 2013 - 4:32 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Seattle Sounders FC bounced back from a disappointing defeat by claiming a 2-0 victory over Chivas USA at the StubHub Center on Saturday. The Sounders were thrashed in a 4-0 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy last time out, but they managed to get back to winning ways upon their return to Carson, Calif., as Obafemi Martins and an own goal from Mario De Luna lifted the visitors to victory.
Seattle (5-4-3) climbs to 18 points on the season to move to within two points of the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Chivas USA (3-8-2) drops its fifth straight league match, extending its winless run to eight games.
Seattle needed just 22 minutes to grab the opening goal as Lamar Neagle unlocked the Chivas defense to release Martins, who proceeded to beat Dan Kennedy with a cheeky chip into the back of the net.
The Goats fell further behind 11 minutes later by way of an own goal that encapsulated the disappointment surrounding the club's season thus far. Mauro Rosales delivered a cross to the back post and De Luna, intending to head the delivery back to Kennedy, turned it into his own net.
Chivas received a lifeline in the 71st minute when Martins was harshly sent off for an alleged kick-out at Gabriel Farfan, but the home side failed to take advantage of the extra man as the Goats experienced defeat for the eighth time this term.
