Galaxy hopes to return to winning ways against Chivas
Jun 21, 2013 - 9:30 PM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Both Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy are in need of three points on Sunday as the two city rivals square off at the StubHub Center.Chivas USA began the season with three wins from its first five games, but has fallen into a deep tailspin with just one point from the next nine matches.
The Goats have been outscored 22-4 in that time, and the slump led to the departure of head coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola on May 29.
Things have been a bit better for the Galaxy, but the two-time defending champions have looked like anything but in recent weeks with just one win from their last five games.
Los Angeles has been held without a goal in three of those five contests, including a 0-0 draw at home against the Portland Timbers on Wednesday.
Chivas lost 3-1 at Vancouver on Wednesday, but maybe more importantly, goalkeeper Dan Kennedy feels as though the team is beginning to settle a bit under new head coach Jose Luis Real.
"I think tactically we're a little bit more positioned and we're not so hectic," Kennedy said. "Now it's a little more calm. Hopefully the transition is smooth. This is a very new group to this league and we've had two coaches already in a short period of time. We're dealing with some transition here and it's important for us the results don't weigh us down."
There is no doubt that such a poor run of results can bring a team's spirit down, and the new boss knows how important a win will be in helping repair the damaged confidence at Chivas.
"We can all assume the team has lost confidence with these negative results, like it happens when you lose games," said Real. "The club has regained some confidence, but we won't have it fully until we win."
The Galaxy currently resides in sixth place in the Western Conference, and is right on the verge of a playoff spot, but forward Robbie Keane would like to see the team develop some consistency, which starts with a very winnable match on Sunday.
"We definitely need consistency because we aren't getting any results. Getting results brings consistency, and coming off a game like this is when you start to see results," Keane said following Wednesday's scoreless draw. "These are the games that you could quite easily lose. We've got another quick game on Sunday and hopefully we can get the three points there."
