United downs San Jose to snap winless skid
Jun 23, 2013 - 1:08 AM Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - A first-half penalty kick from Chris Pontius was enough to lift D.C. United to a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at RFK Stadium on Saturday, snapping United's 13-match winless streak. The lone goal arrived in the 11th minute when United's Chris Korb got into the penalty area on the right and was tripped by San Jose defender Justin Morrow.
Pontius stepped to the spot and he sent Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch the wrong way, giving him his first goal of the season and the hosts a rare lead.
John Thorrington forced Busch to make an acrobatic save a few minutes later, but D.C. had to hold off a strong second-half rally from the visitors.
Shea Salinas found a pocket of space in behind the United defense but his shot was straight at goalkeeper Bill Hamid.
Adam Jahn was next to threaten and he struck the post after latching on to a pass from Sam Cronin.
Alan Gordon volleyed a ball just over the crossbar from seven yards as San Jose continued to press for the equalizer, but the result wasn't safe until just before the final whistle when Morrow fired a half-volley from near the penalty spot over the net.
After winning his debut against the Colorado Rapids last weekend, San Jose interim coach Mark Watson tasted defeat for the first time.
