'Quakes, Revs square off at Gillette

Jul 5, 2013 - 8:28 PM Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - A pair of cross-country rivals lock horns on Saturday as the New England Revolution welcome the San Jose Earthquakes to Gillette Stadium.

San Jose heads into Saturday's tilt riding the roller coaster of emotions that is the Major League Soccer season with an exhilarating signature win followed in quick succession by a stumble on the road.

Last Saturday, the 'Quakes pulled off their biggest win of the season as Shea Salinas and Alan Gordon bagged goals in stoppage time as San Jose stunned the rival Los Angeles Galaxy, 3-2, at Stanford Stadium.

But just four days later, a shorthanded San Jose side fell to the Chicago Fire by a 3-2 score at Toyota Park.

The 'Quakes were missing five regular starters Wednesday night due to suspension, injury and Gold Cup call-ups for Chris Wondolowski, newly-signed center back Clarence Goodson, Nana Attakora and Marvin Chavez.

Still, San Jose struck first when Gordon found the back of the net in the 14th minute, but Dilly Duka equalized for the Fire in the 38th minute.

Patrick Nyarko scored to put the hosts ahead two minutes into the second half, but an own goal by Joel Lindpere made it 2-2 18 minutes from time.

It looked as if San Jose would escape with a point, but Chris Rolfe's tally six minutes from time gave the Fire the victory.

New England, meanwhile, will attempt to get back on the winning track after managing a 1-1 draw last Saturday with Chivas USA.

The Goats grabbed an early lead on New England in the 18th minute when Laurent Courtois found the back of the net, but Chad Barrett came off the bench for the Revs and scored the equalizer two minutes from time to rescue a point for his club.

"We are a little bit disappointed on how we played the majority of the game," New England head coach Jay Heaps said. "We did a good job at times possessing, but our balls weren't good enough.

"It was probably the first game that we couldn't sort anything offensively. That's said, our five were really good, and we never gave up, we never stopped knocking on the door and of course we got through, Chad came in and changed the game. I thought he has done a good job before, he really changed the dynamic, his touch was on, and he moved well."

"We had good chances. I had two headers that I thought I was going get a clean look. (Chivas goalkeeper)[Dan] Kennedy got one of them and one of the defenders did well on the other," Barrett remarked. "We can't say we just didn't take our chances, or say that we didn't deserve to win this. I think we deserved to come away with three points; this definitely feels like a loss, you can tell the guys are disappointed by it, which is good, but now we have two home games coming up and they're must-wins. We have to start taking full points at home and get some results."

In 36 all-time meetings between the clubs, San Jose holds a comfortable 20-11-5 mark. Last season, Wondowlowski netted the only goal of the match in a 1-0 win for San Jose.
