Sounders roll past winless Impact
Mar 23, 2014 - 10:07 PM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Seattle Sounders FC climbed to second place in the Western Conference on Sunday after waltzing to a 2-0 over the Montreal Impact at Olympic Stadium.Coming off a shock 2-1 home defeat against the new-look Toronto FC, Seattle was looking to get off to a good start against a struggling Montreal side and the visitors snagged the lead in the eighth minute with some good fortune.
Gonzalo Pineda lofted a free kick into the penalty area that was nodded on by Lamar Neagle. The ball struck the post and bounced off the arm of Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins before ending up in the net for an own goal.
The Sounders then made it 2-0 in the 58th minute as Kenny Copper raced down the right flank to the end line and chipped a cross into the box where Obafemi Martins was there to power is past Perkins.
Montreal's best chances came late on as Hassoun Camara got his head on a corner kick in the 71st minute, but the ball flew over the crossbar. The hosts came even closer to scoring a few minutes later, but Blake Smith's strike was blasted off the line and out of danger by Djimi Traore.
The result sees Seattle climb to within one point of FC Dallas for the top spot in the West, while Montreal remains winless in the early going with three defeats from its first three matches.
