Galaxy ready to tangle with Chivas in SuperClasico

Apr 4, 2014 - 9:10 PM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Galaxy will be happy to see Chivas USA on the other side of the field at the StubHub Center on Sunday in another addition of the SuperClasico.

The Galaxy opened the MLS regular season with a pair of matches against Real Salt Lake, losing 1-0 in their home opener to RSL before securing a 1-1 draw at Rio Tinto Stadium two weeks ago.

In between, Los Angeles was knocked out of the CONCACAF Champions League in the quarterfinal round by Mexican side Tijuana, losing 4-3 on aggregate after winning the first leg, 1-0.

The schedule has also done the team no favors with the Galaxy set play its third game in the span of five weeks, which has made it difficult for Bruce Arena's side to develop any kind of rhythm.

Los Angeles last took the field in MLS two weeks ago, but defender Todd Dunivant believes the break is at a good time and that it will give his team the chance to gather itself after a tough start.

"I think the break comes at a good time, really," Dunivant said. "It gives us a chance to regroup after the [CONCACAF] Champions League. I thought we did a good job responding in Salt Lake and getting that point and letting Champions League not dwell on us."

The Galaxy is happy to be playing anyone other than Real Salt Lake, but they will be especially happy to see Chivas because the team owns an 11-1-4 record against the Goats since 2008.

Chivas win its opening match this year and has since earned two points from its last three games.

Wilmer Cabrera's side sustained a 3-1 defeat at FC Dallas two weeks ago, but responded well in a 1-1 draw at Red Bull New York last Sunday.

Erick Torres continued his strong start to the campaign with a fourth goal in as many games to give Chivas a 1-0 lead.

But Peguy Luyindula equalized from a corner kick shortly before the final whistle, preventing Chivas from three big road points.

Despite the late goal, Cabrera was still pleased with the result overall.

"It obviously hurts. But if you said to me at the beginning of the game that we would come over here to Red Bull Arena to play against this excellent team that last year was the Supporters' Shield winner and we tie, I would have said, 'Yes, let's do it.' So it is a good result overall," Cabrera said. "It hurts because we were 94 minutes ahead but the reality is that you have to play the whole game."

Starting with the Galaxy on Sunday, Chivas will play its next four games against Western Conference opposition, giving the team a chance to see how it stacks up against the rest of its conference rivals.
