MacMath's PK save earns Union a point against Fire
Apr 5, 2014 - 11:16 PM Bridgeview, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Zac MacMath rescued a point in spectacular fashion on Saturday, stopping a penalty kick in injury time to earn the Philadelphia Union a 2-2 draw with the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park.Chicago struck first just 16 minutes into the match when Jeff Larentowicz got to the end line and sent a low cross into the box where Mike Magee smashed it into the roof of the net.
But Philadelphia answered back in the 32nd minute when Maurice Edu scored on the turn for his first goal in the Philadelphia kit.
The Union then took the lead just six minutes later as a free kick from distance by Leo Fernandes skipped through the traffic in front of goal and past Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson for a 2-1 lead at the break.
Chicago continued to press and found a late equalizer on a free kick from Magee that was headed across the face of goal by Jhon-Kennedy Hurtado and past MacMath by Juan Luis Anangono.
The Fire had a golden opportunity to steal three points deep in stoppage time when Anangono was taken down in the box by Union defender Aaron Wheeler, resulting in a penalty kick.
Magee stepped to the spot, but MacMath got down to his left quickly to make the stop, then robbed Magee again on the rebound to preserve a point for the Union.
The result sees the Union improve to six points from five games, while the Fire have drawn four straight and a still looking for their first win of the season.
