Sanchez lifts Rapids past Galaxy

May 4, 2014 - 3:13 AM Commerce City, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Vicente Sanchez's first-half goal held up as the winner on Saturday as the Colorado Rapids came away with a gritty 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

After getting thrashed, 4-1, by Seattle Sounders FC last weekend, Colorado needed a rebound performance in front of its home fans, and that's exactly what the club produced.

It was a tight affair through the first quarter-hour, but the hosts found the breakthrough in the 20th minute when Sanchez brought down a long cross-field pass from Marc Burch on the right flank and beat Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo to the top left corner with a beautiful chipped effort.

Los Angeles came out looking for the equalizer in the second half and created several quality opportunities. The visitors fired four attempts on goal and kept almost 60 percent of the ball, but could never get one past Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin.

The result sees the Rapids put an end to their brief two-match winless run, while the Galaxy suffer defeat for the second time this season and remain on eight points from six matches.
