New England cruises past Philadelphia
May 18, 2014 - 1:08 AM Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Revolution continued their scoring tear on Saturday by routing the Philadelphia Union in a 5-3 victory at PPL Park.The Revs cruised to a 5-0 defeat of Seattle Sounders FC last week and managed to turn in another five-star performance against the struggling Union, who were unable to build upon Wednesday's promising defeat of Sporting Kansas City.
New England opened the scoring in Saturday's affair in the 13th minute when A.J. Soares nodded home a corner kick from Chris Tierney.
The lead was doubled in the 26th minute when Diego Fagundez collected a pass from Teal Bunbury and fired home his third goal of the season.
Philadelphia managed to pull one back through Vincent Nogueira's thundering strike in the 36th minute, but the second half belonged to the visitors.
Lee Nguyen nabbed his team-leading fifth goal of the season early in the second period, taking a through ball from Daigo Kobayashi and firing home a shot through traffic.
Tierney added to the lead in the 57th minute with a superb free kick while Patrick Mullins netted his third goal of the season 10 minutes later.
Philadelphia managed to pull back a pair of goals through Sheanon Williams' first-time finish in the 76th minute and a late Sebastien Le Toux penalty, but the damage had been done.
New England (6-3-2) improves to 20 points on the season to climb into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference while Philadelphia (2-6-5) stays put on 11 points.
