United to a 1-0 win at RFK Stadium.Espindola struck in the 28th minute when he collected a layoff from Chris Korb and sent a curling effort into the top corner from the right flank.
The hosts clung to the lead and preserved the clean sheet to take all three points, dooming Sporting to a fifth straight league match without a win.
United (6-4-3) improves to 21 points on the season to climb into second place in the Eastern Conference, putting the club two points clear of Sporting (5-5-4).
