Donovan salvages point for Galaxy against Fire
Jun 1, 2014 - 10:17 PM Bridgeview, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Landon Donovan's 74th-minute goal rescued a point for the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday as the club earned a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park.Following a dull first 45 minutes, Jeff Larentowicz fired Chicago in front with a penalty kick in the 68th minute, only for Donovan to cancel out that tally six minutes later, earning the club its seventh point from the past three games.
A turnover by the Galaxy in the first half led to the only real chance in the opening 45 minutes that was squandered by a poor finish from Chicago's Quincy Amarikwa.
The Galaxy failed to put a shot on goal in the opening half, but they had a good look at goal in the 61st minute that saw Robbie Keane's goal-bound effort blocked by defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado.
Five minutes later, Amarikwa drew a foul just inside the penalty area on Juninho, allowing Larentowicz to step to the spot and send goalkeeper Jaime Penedo the wrong way.
The lead lasted just six minutes, however, as Robbie Rogers stole the ball in the offensive third and delivered a cross to the back post for Donovan to apply the final touch.
Chicago had one final chance nine minutes from time, and it took a great save from Penedo to keep out a long-range rocket from Larentowicz.
