Bruin leaves it late as Houston downs DCU

Aug 4, 2014 - 2:07 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Bruin notched a late winner at BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday as the Houston Dynamo stole three points from D.C. United in a 1-0 victory.

Houston was kept in check until stoppage time when a defensive miscue allowed Bruin to slide home the winner for the club's first league victory since May 17, snapping an eight-game winless run.

The Dynamo (6-11-4) improve to 22 points on the season while D.C. United (11-6-4) remains on 37 points, suffering its first league defeat since June 28.

Houston nearly broke the deadlock in the seventh minute when Bruin got on the end of a cross from Giles Barnes but could only manage to turn his header onto the crossbar.

Bruin had another aerial chance in the 21st minute when he nodded a cross on target, but Bill Hamid was equal to the task and was able to tip the attempt out of play.

The Dynamo continued to pepper the D.C. United net just before halftime when a well-worked counter released Barnes on the right side of the box, but Hamid came up big once again to turn the shot out for a corner kick.

Brad Davis tested Hamid with a superb shot from distance nine minutes into the second half, but the United 'keeper was sure-handed in making the save to keep the home side scoreless.

Houston would be made to wait until the dying stages for the winner, which came by way of a defensive calamity from the visiting side.

Hamid failed to communicate with his central defenders on a headed pass back, allowing Omar Cummings to swoop in and slide a pass in front of goal for Bruin to tuck home into the empty net.
