Goias thrashes Palmeiras

Sep 22, 2014 - 5:21 PM Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Six different players found the back of the net on Sunday as Goias rolled to a 6-0 thrashing of Palmeiras at the Estadio de Haile Pinheiro.

Coming off two consecutive losses in league play, Goias was determined to get off to a good start in front of the home fans and did just that when Ramon struck after eight minutes.

Four minutes later Esquerdinha doubled the advantage and Erik made it 3-0 three minutes prior to the half hour mark.

It was 4-0 for the home side in the 37th minute through a goal from David Franca and Thiago Mendes added a fifth tally four minutes into the second half.

Things got even worse for Palmeiras 18 minutes from time when Agustin Lionel Allione was shown a straight red card and Welinton put an exclamation point on the rout with a sixth goal for Goias in stoppage time.

The result lifts Goias into 10th place in the table with 30 points from 23 matches, while Palmeiras stays rooted to the bottom of the table with just 22 points.

Also in Brazil on Sunday, Fabio Santos converted a pair of penalty kicks as Corinthians claimed a 3-2 win over Sao Paulo, while league leaders Cruzeiro suffered a second consecutive loss, falling to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Atletico Mineiro.

Eduardo and Fred traded goals as Flamengo and Fluminense played to a 1-1 draw, while Felipe Azevedo netted the only goal of the match to hand Sport Recife claimed a 1-0 win over Coritiba.

Kadu and Luiz Gustavo scored on either side of the intermission to lift Vitoria to a 2-1 win over Bahia, while Dudu netted after just right minutes to send Gremio to a 1-0 win over Chapecoense.

Sunday's final fixture saw Robinho and Lucas Lima netted second-half goals to help Santos escape with a 3-1 win over Figueirense.

On Saturday, Rafael Moura scored nine minutes from time as Internacional took all three points with a 1-0 win over Atletico PR, while Pablo Zeballos and Paulo Cesar Baier traded goals as Criciuma and Botafogo played to a 1-1 draw.
