Villa's brace propels NYC past TFC
Jun 21, 2015 - 1:19 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - A goal in each half from David Villa helped New York City FC to a 2-0 win over Toronto FC at BMO Field on Saturday, handing NYC a third straight victory.Villa scored from the penalty spot after eight minutes and added a second goal in the 58th to help snap TFC's three-game winning run.
Toronto's Benoit Cheyrou was called for a handball inside his own penalty area from a corner kick, allowing Villa to step to the spot and calmly dispatch his kick inside the lower left corner of the net.
New York City goalkeeper Josh Saunders had a big hand in the victory as well as he produced a string of fine stops in the first half to keep Toronto off the scoreboard.
The first came in the 29th minute on a curling free kick from Sebastian Giovinco, which was parried to safety by Saunders.
Saunders then somehow kept out a shot from Michael Bradley with the United States international just a yard from the net.
He completed his hat trick of quality saves one minute later when he denied Luke Moore with a save at full stretch.
The hosts were really applying the pressure as the second half started, but Villa scored a crucial second goal shortly before the hour mark to seal the win as he got to the front of goal and turned home a cross from Mehdi Ballouchy following a turnover.
