Edu saves point for Union in draw with Impact

Jun 28, 2015 - 1:17 AM Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Maurice Edu's first goal of the season rescued a point for the Philadelphia Union on Saturday as the club battled to a 2-2 draw with the Montreal Impact at a rain-soaked PPL Park.

Eric Auyk netted the other tally, while Cristian Maidana and C.J. Sapong added assists for Philadelphia, which extended its modest unbeaten streak in league play to two games.

Former Union man Jack McInerney and Ignacio Piatti scored the goals for Montreal, which improved to 18 points on the season.

Philadelphia opened the scoring after eight minutes in the driving rain when Sapong chested the ball down in the box and laid it off to Ayuk, who rocketed his strike into the top left corner.

But Montreal pulled level in the 28th minute when Piatti worked his way through the Union defense to the top of the box and ripped one into the bottom right corner, leaving Union goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre with no chance.

The visitors went down to 10 men in the 67th minute when Patrice Bernier was sent off for a late challenge, but McInerney put the Impact up just four minutes later.

The hosts grabbed an equalizer when Fabinho drove one on frame from distance with pace. Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush spilled the rebound and Edu was there to knock it into the gaping net to save a point for his side.
