Adelaide sign fringe Socceroo Holland
Sep 21, 2016 - 7:41 AM Fringe Socceroo James Holland says winning back his Australian spot is a key factor in signing with A-League champions Adelaide United.Holland has inked a two-year deal with the Reds, ending a seven-year stint in Europe.
The creative midfielder, with 15 national caps, was a member of Australia's 2014 World Cup squad but had since drifted from the thoughts of coach Ange Postecoglou.
But he hopes meaningful minutes in the A-League will prompt Postecoglou to consider him again.
"To be perfectly honest, I was looking to stay in Europe - that was my goal," Holland told reporters on Wednesday in Adelaide.
"It got to a situation where the offers that were put in front of me were not really what I was looking for.
"And I still have ambitions to get back in the Socceroos ... so I thought the next step in my career was an important one because, obviously, I figured would lead me into the next World Cup.
"And seeing the success Adelaide has had over the last few years, and producing players that have done well, especially in my position, kick on and do bigger and better things , that was a big influence."
Holland, 27, spent the past seven years playing in the Netherlands, Austria and Germany.
Adelaide, the reigning A-League champions, are also closing in on signing Spanish striker Sergi Guardiola for the domestic season which starts next month.
The Spaniard, no relation to world-renowned manager Pep Guardiola, has agreed in principle to a stint at Adelaide after his La Liga side Granada's release of the 25-year-old on loan.
The signings bolster an Adelaide outfit depleted by the off-season departures of the likes of title-winners Bruce Djite, Stefan Mauk, Craig Goodwin, Bruce Kamau and Pablo Sanchez.
