Goals will come for Roar: Matt McKay

Jan 3, 2017 - 12:36 AM Matt McKay is confident the goals will start flowing again for Brisbane Roar as they look to get their A-League title charge back on track against Newcastle.

The Roar's 10-game unbeaten run was ended with a 2-0 defeat to runaway ladder leaders Sydney FC last Friday.

Third-placed Brisbane had their chances but now sit a whopping 12 points adrift of the Sky Blues and five behind the in-form Melbourne Victory, who also have a game in hand.

But perhaps more concerning is their lacklustre attacking record.

Brisbane has scored just 16 goals so far this season - the least of any current top-six team, including the struggling Western Sydney Wanderers, while Sydney have scored almost double that amount.

By this stage last season, the Roar had scored six more goals and were top of the table, but skipper McKay is confident the pendulum will swing soon.

"We've got the players to create chances and the players who can take them," he said.

"It's just a bit of confidence.

"You saw a few weeks ago with the Adelaide game, we scored four - it's in us, definitely.

"It'll come. I just encourage our forward players to keep going."

The Roar will be favourites to defeat the Jets on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium, where they have not lost in nearly 12 months.

But coach Mark Jones's side is no walkover this season and dealt Brisbane a shock 4-0 defeat back in round two.

"We've come a long way since then, we're 100 per cent a better side and I think we can show that this weekend," McKay said.

McKay is not concerned with the state of the Suncorp Stadium pitch, which was left damaged by a recent concert and widely panned after Brisbane's 1-1 draw with the Wanderers just before Christmas.

"It's had a few weeks to recover so I'm sure it will be fine," he said.

"We've got a great home record, even when the pitch has struggled. We're extremely comfortable there."
