Brown makes airport dash as Jets seal win
Jan 7, 2017 - 9:32 AM Wayne Brown might have missed the end of Newcastle's thrilling 3-2 A-League victory over Brisbane Roar but it's unlikely the English midfielder will mind too much.Brown made a hasty exit from Saturday's match at Suncorp Stadium at half-time, when news filtered through that his wife was in labour a week before she was due to give birth.
With coach Mark Jones' blessing, as soon as he returned to the sheds, Brown packed his bags, ordered a taxi and headed straight to Brisbane Airport for a pre-booked flight home.
"It was real simple. He came in, had a flight on hold in case, and so we're happy for him to go home," Jones said.
"Family's more important.
"Hopefully everything goes well, he has a second child and as it was, it just gives someone else an opportunity.
"We said to Andrew (Nabbout) he was probably the one that was going to come off but he stays on the field and as circumstances go, he scores the second goal. The luck went our way."
Brown's substitute Ma Leilei was lively in the second half but it was Danish import Morten Nordstrand who provided the winner with his 84th-minute strike from close range.
The Jets' fourth win of the year takes them into sixth spot of the ladder, and Jones is hopeful the days of Newcastle being considered A-League easybeats is over.
"That's always ticked me. It doesn't take much to turn it around," he said.
"We're always confident. We got flack at the start of the year because I was confident once we had everyone back, we'd play good football.
"Now we've got a little eye on fourth spot and we're trying to chase that. Today helped."
