Liverpool expect Matip decision on Friday
Jan 17, 2017 - 3:20 PM Liverpool will find out on Friday whether FIFA will open a case on the eligibility of defender Joel Matip, manager Juergen Klopp said.Matip was withdrawn from Liverpool's squad for Sunday's Premier League match at Manchester United as the club sought clarification over whether he could play.
The Germany-born Matip was included in Cameroon's preliminary squad for this month's Africa Cup of Nations but was left out of the final squad for the tournament after informing officials he didn't want to play.
FIFA rules state a player could be prevented from playing for his club if he refuses international duty and Liverpool said the Cameroon Football Federation have not said if Matip can play for them.
"There was not a lot of times in my life that I was in a situation like this," Klopp told a news conference on Tuesday. "The thing is that in this moment, we are sure we've done nothing wrong. Joel Matip did nothing wrong.
"FIFA told us on Friday, this Friday, they will decide if they open a case or not.
Klopp admitted to being confused over the whole situation. "He did not play for Cameroon since 2015. In this moment he is not in the squad, but we have no 100 per cent guarantee that he could play for us," the manager said.
"The procedure, I'd consider to line him up tomorrow [in the FA Cup replay at Plymouth], but I'm not sure I can. I accept rules in life, but I think they are based on human senses."
