Henrique to leave Adelaide United
Jan 31, 2017 - 5:00 AM Adelaide United are bracing to lose another recruit with attacker Henrique on the cusp of moving to Thailand. But the struggling Reds are believed to be closing in on signing Sengalese striker Papa Babacar Diawara, known as Baba.
The 29-year-old free agent has spent stints with Sevilla in Spain's and Maritimo in Portugal's Primeira Liga.
Baba's expected arrival will cushion Adelaide's blow of losing Henrique, who flew to Thailand on Tuesday for medicals with Thai club Chiangrai United.
The 31-year-old Brazilian-born attacker will join fellow recruits James Holland (China) and Sergi Guardiola (Spain) in leaving Adelaide in the middle of the A-League season.
"Three of our new signings this year lasted four months," Adelaide captain Eugene Galekovic said on Tuesday.
"It's not great. But that's football.
"We're a world game and there's teams all over the world that poach players - and this year it has been three players and three experienced boys.
"It's disappointing but that is the nature of the game."
Henrique joined the Reds after a stint in Malaysia, which followed seven years with Brisbane Roar.
Fringe Socceroo midfielder Holland has moved to Chinese outfit Liaoning Whowin while striker Guardiola, loaned from Spain's Granada, has returned to his homeland and second-division club Real Murcia.
Galekovic believed Adelaide, languishing in last spot on the A-League ladder with just two wins in a dismal title defence, were positioned to add some signings of their own before the transfer deadline expired later Tuesday.
"I'm hearing that we're about to sign some boys, hopefully the replacements come in and can do the job," he said.
Adelaide will be forced to delve into their reserves for Sunday's away fixture against Central Coast with attacker Nikola Mileusnic in doubt after injuring a hamstring at Tuesday's training.
Midfielder Ryan Kitto also strained a hamstring in Sunday's draw with Wellington.
