Dynamo score late to tie FC Dallas

Apr 6, 2008 - 10:31 PM By Jeremy Rakes PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- FC Dallas just can't seem to get a win here.

Despite two goals by Kenny Cooper, the Hoops settled for a 3-3 tie with the Houston Dynamo on Sunday at Robertson Stadium when Geoff Cameron netted a goal in the 91st minute.

It was the first tie for FC Dallas (0-0-2) here in the three-year rivalry.

"We're very disappointed. It feels like a loss," FC Dallas coach Steve Morrow said. "We should have won the game. We had a couple chances to go 4-2 up throughout the game. We are disappointed to give up a goal so late in the game.

"We did the same thing last week, so we should be sitting on two wins and six points right now, but it's still early, and we can take a lot of positives from it. We'll take those and continue to get better."

Franco Caraccio gave Houston a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when he headed a cross from Corey Ashe into the right side of the net.

"We were helping ourselves and shooting ourselves in the foot in the next minute," Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear said. "The attitude was fantastic. I thought it was good to see Franco and Geoff getting their first goals. Hopefully, that will give them some much-needed confidence in the first part of the season."

The Dynamo's lead evaporated in the 35th minute as Cooper scored the first of his two goals on a blooper from the upper right box that went over Houston goalkeeper Tony Caig and in.

Cooper followed in the 45th minute with a one-timer from the upper box that Caig got a hand on, but couldn't corrall to give FCD a 2-1 halftime lead.

Houston (0-1-1) knotted the score at 2-2 in the 57th minute when Brian Ching got a foot on a Cameron cross in the area and got it in.

Arturo Alvarez, however, gave the Hoops the lead back a minute later when he got the ball on a breakaway on the left side of the upper box and belted one past Caig.

Alvarez had received a red card in the second leg of the Western Conference semifinals last year in Houston, a series in which Houston came back to win on aggregate, 4-2, en route to their second straight MLS Cup championship.

"The last time I was here I got a stupid red card and let my team down," Alvarez said. "I've done so much in soccer to make myself a better player on and off the field. That was my first red card of my career and I don't plan to get anymore. I'm really happy that I came here, and I performed well. I want to continue to do that in the future."

Cameron tied the score in the 91st minute with a one-timer from outside the upper half circle that hit just under the crossbar and in for the tie.

"It was a great experience. I got the ball down side left," Cameron said. "I was going to play the ball down the line, but I didn't see anything available. I just cut in, saw Brian (Ching) check off his man. He had a great turn, and I thought he was going to take it in himself. The guy came closing down and sliding through, and I just hit the ball as hard as I could. It went in the net."

Dynamo starting goalkeeper Pat Onstad left the game in the 28th minute with a right shoulder injury after hitting the field hard in a collision with FCD's Blake Wagner five minutes earlier, pressing Caig into action.

Onstad had his right shoulder heavily iced after the game, but wouldn't say whether he would play Wednesday night in Costa Rica against Saprissa in their CONCACAF Champions' Cup semifinal series.
