Rogers nets pair as Crew top Chivas
Apr 13, 2008 - 2:58 AM COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Robbie Rogers scored his second goal of the contest in the 83rd minute to power the Columbus Crew to a 4-3 victory over Chivas USA on Saturday.Guillermo Barros Schelotto opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick in the 27th minute and Alejandro Moreno tallied nine minutes later for Columbus (2-1-0).
Sacha Kljestan, Jesse Marsch and Paulo Nagamura scored for Chivas (1-1-1).
With the game tied at 3-3 in the 83rd minute, Rogers blasted a shot from outside the box that beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
"My second goal was pretty lucky I think," Rogers said. "The defender misjudged it and it came to my chest and I took a whack at it and I think Brad just misjudged it."
Rogers' first goal - which came on a breakaway - gave Columbus a 3-1 lead, but Marsch and Nagamura tallied five minutes apart to level the contest.
"When we got up 3-1, we thought we had it," Columbus coach Sigi Schmid said. "Then we give up a soft second goal and the game got really exciting from there. But we are finding a way to win, and finding a way to score goals and we are winning at home - all of which is important."
After Moreno was pulled down in the penalty area by Chivas' Jim Curtin, Schelotto converted the penalty kick, beating Guzan to give Columbus a 1-0 lead.
"I just wanted to make sure I scored," Schelotto said. "I didn't want to get cute with it, I just tried to strike it hard and the goalkeeper went the wrong way."
Kljestan forged a tie just seven minutes later. After accepting a feed from Keith Savage, who was playing in his first MLS game, Kljestan launched a strike from outside the box that beat goalkeeper Will Hesmer and sailed just inside the right goalpost.
Moreno regained the advantage for Columbus just two minutes later, teaming with Schelotto on a pretty give-and-go exchange. Schelotto advanced all the way into the box before feeding Moreno, who sent a right-footed strike past Guzan and inside the left post for a 2-1 edge.
"It was a difficult way to lose a game tonight," Chivas coach Preki said. "I thought we came out and played a pretty decent 25 minutes and had a good opportunity to score and didn't. Then we managed to make mistakes and get punished.
"When you play away from home and score three goals, you should be coming away with something."
