Angel, Borman lift Red Bulls over Galaxy
May 11, 2008 - 6:44 AM CARSON, California (Ticker) -- Juan Pablo Angel and Danleigh Borman recorded their first goals of the season as the New York Red Bulls pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday.Just after the Galaxy tied the game at 1-1, Angel took an outlet feed from Dane Richards and blasted a shot past Steve Cronin in the 78th minute.
"It's been a difficult start for me in terms of the injury that I have," Angel said. "Today was just another step forward to get back to fitness and get on with my season. In terms of a reaction, it was great to come back right away from giving up the goal.
"It was a great counterattack and a great ball from Dane Richards - and the fact that it was the winning goal is terrific."
The Red Bulls (3-1-2) opened the scoring in the 21st minute on Borman's unassisted tally. Hunter Freeman's header was stopped by Cronin, but Borman collected the rebound and deposited his shot in the goal.
Jon Conway made three saves for New York, which is unbeaten over its last four contests.
"Getting the points on the road is massive, that makes three (road) games in a row without a loss and what this shows is we can get a result on the road when we change our formation," Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio said. "I'm very happy with the effort from the players and the result."
Alan Gordon scored the lone tally for the Galaxy (2-3-2) in the 77th minute when he accepted a cross pass from Mike Randolph and fired a shot into the right corner for his third tally of the season.
"I'm disappointed with the way we started the game," Los Angeles coach Ruud Gullit said. "This is the second time in a row that we have started like this. It cost the team a lot of energy just to get back in this game and then to give up a goal so soon after scoring is totally unacceptable. This is very frustrating."
Los Angeles midfielder David Beckham had a pair of direct free kicks in extra time but failed to net the equalizer. He also picked up a yellow card for a reckless foul in the 67th minute.
"Very frustrating to get back a goal and then give one up so soon after," Beckham said. "It's a learning curve. I don't think that we played too bad tonight. We were just careless at that point in the game and it cost us when you make mistakes like that, you get punished."
