Angel leads New York past D.C. United
Aug 11, 2008 - 12:49 AM EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Juan Pablo Angel tallied two goals to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 4-1, come-from-behind victory over D.C. United on Sunday. The Red Bulls scored the last four goals of the match after surrendering a goal to United's Jaime Moreno, his eighth of the year, in the 16th minute.
"We showed what we haven't showed earlier in the year. We battled back and showed character," Angel said. "It was not about D.C.; it was more about us."
The win for New York avenged a 4-1 loss to rival United earlier this season, something forward Mike Magee said motivated the team.
"The last few years we haven't had much success against them.," he said. "We marked this game on the calendar and we kinda knew we'd have a good performance today. We treated it as a do-or-die game."
New York (6-6-7) tied the match in the 27th minute on Angel's first goal of the game and fifth of the season. He bent a free kick from about 25 yards out around the United wall and past goalkeeper Zach Wells.
Magee picked up a loose ball in the box and scored an unassisted goal just before the half to give New York a 2-1 lead, and Angel's second goal in the 50th minute put the game away. He beat United defender Marc Burch to a bouncing ball and lofted it over Wells for his sixth goal of the year.
"We got what we deserved. We showed great commitment and executed our game plan," New York head coach Juan Carlos Osorio said. "The game was not only big points-wise, but for the team morale it was huge."
Jorge Rojas set up a wide-open Sinisa Ubiparipovic for his first career goal to cap the scoring for the Red Bulls in the final minutes.
The win pulls the Red Bulls into a four-way tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. United (8-9-1), Toronto FC and the Kansas City Wizards join New York with 25 points.
New York rebounded from a 6-2 defeat to FC Barcelona on Wednesday, a game that Osorio believes helped his team prepare for the match against United.
"I showed a little bit of video to them and showed them that that team didn't do anything tactically on defense," he said. ."They just had a willingness to close people down and that's what we did today."
The Red Bulls scored more than three goals for the first time this season. It also marked the first time this season that New York won after surrendering the first goal.
D.C. United, who has been outscored, 18-6, on the road this season, fell to 1-6-1 away from home.
