Fowles leads Sky to 88-61 win over San Antonio

Jul 14, 2010 - 8:23 PM ROSEMONT, Ill.(AP) -- Sylvia Fowles led five players in double-figures scoring, and the Chicago Sky beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 88-61 on Wednesday to snap a two-game skid.

Fowles, Jia Perkins and Epiphanny Prince scored 14 points each for the Sky (9-11), who never trailed in the game. Erin Thorn and Tamera Young added 10 points each.

Perkins knows the Sky need more efforts like this to make a run for a playoff berth.

"We want to stay consistent, this is just one game," she said. "We have 14 more to go and we need to win most of them. Our main focus right now is to win games and get this playoff run."

The victory moved Chicago 2 1/2 games behind fourth-place Connecticut for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Sky are one-half game behind fifth-place New York.

Chicago guard Dominique Canty pulled down a rebound in the third quarter to become one of nine WNBA players with 2,500 points, 900 assists and 900 rebounds.

The margin of victory was the largest in franchise history for Chicago, surpassing a 95-70 romp over Tulsa on June 5. The Sky also set a team record for fewest turnovers in a game with four.

Fowles, the All-Star game MVP in the U.S. national team's 99-72 win over the WNBA All-Stars on Saturday, picked up three first-half fouls and played less than 18 minutes against San Antonio.

"It's always great when we can get equal amount of shots for everybody," Perkins said. "Once Syl got out I think it was harder for them to focus and everybody just stepped up and we made some shots. We not only made shots, but we also penetrated and got everyone some good shots."

Sophia Young had 14 points to lead the Silver Stars (6-11), who have lost four of their last five games and four straight on the road. Roneeka Hodges added 10 points off the bench.

"(Chicago's) perimeter play is pretty good and they know how to score in a variety of ways," Silver Stars coach Sandy Brondello said. "We just don't play good 1-on-1 defense, no matter how much we talk about it.

"We're not going to stop all their shots, because they have a lot of weapons. But we can do a better job than we did."

The Sky opened with 10 consecutive points and their lead never dipped below seven the rest of the opening half. Fowles played only 33 seconds in the second quarter and just 5:42 for the half. But others picked up the slack, including Perkins' six points in the second quarter while Young had six in the third.

Thorn had all 10 of her points off the bench in the fourth quarter, when the game was already out of reach.

The game drew announced crowd of 6,950 to suburban Allstate Arena, which was also a team record.
