Liberty trounce Sun in season opener
May 17, 2014 - 1:18 AM Uncasville, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Cappie Pondexter scored 17 points to lead the New York Liberty to a 75-54 win over the Connecticut Sun on Friday in the season opener for both teams.Anna Cruz tallied 11 points with nine rebounds and DeLisha Milton-Jones added 10 points in the win.
Chiney Ogwumike, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft, paced the Sun with 13 points in the her professional debut.
The Sun actually led 21-20 after the first quarter, but New York seized control over the final three frames to win the contest going away.
The Liberty scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take a 27-21 lead. Connecticut didn't make a basket until Ogwumike converted in close with under five minutes left in the half.
The Sun gained a two-point edge minutes later, but New York took a 37-31 lead into the break.
Pondexter's 3-pointer with 4 1/2 minutes left in the third staked the visitors to a 48-34 lead.
The Liberty brought a 14-point edge into the fourth and led by as many as 24 in the final period.
