Taurasi, Mercury outlast Stars in 2-OT

Jun 8, 2014 - 2:58 AM San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Diana Taurasi tied the game with a 3- pointer late in regulation before capping Phoenix's 13-0 start to the second overtime with another triple, as the Mercury secured a 91-79 victory over the San Antonio Stars on Saturday.

Becky Hammon buried two free throws to give San Antonio a 71-68 lead with 11 seconds left in regulation, but Taurasi drained a trey at the other end before the Mercury came up with a big defensive stop to force overtime.

Taurasi's layup with 2:18 left in the first extra session tied the game at 75-75 and Candice Dupree added a layup just over a minute later to give the Mercury the lead. However, Jia Perkins hit two free throws at the other end and neither team scored over the final minute of the frame to send the game to another overtime.

Phoenix dominated from there, as Dupree poured in back-to-back buckets, DeWanna Bonner buried a jumper, and Penny Taylor made four straight free throws before Taurasi's triple gave the Mercury a 90-77 lead.

Danielle Robinson got a layup to fall for San Antonio's only points of the second overtime and Taurasi added a free throw to account for the final margin.

Dupree registered a game-high 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Taurasi totaled 19 points, seven boards and five assists. Brittney Griner recorded a 16-point, 18-rebound double-double for the Mercury, who improved to 5-2 on the season.

Robinson supplied 17 points and six boards to pace the Stars, who have lost three of their last four games.
