Mercury edge Shock to win fifth straight

Jun 29, 2014 - 11:11 PM Tulsa, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Brittney Griner scored 21 points and blocked a league record 11 shots as the Phoenix Mercury beat the Tulsa Shock, 80-77, on Sunday.

Penny Taylor scored 17 points for Phoenix, while Diana Taurasi and DeWanna Bonner added 14 points apiece. Taurasi also had eight assists.

Griner set the WNBA all-time record for blocks in a game, edging the mark of 10 shared by Margo Dydek and Lisa Leslie.

Glory Johnson, Odyssey Sims and Skylar Diggins all had 16 points for Tulsa, combining to shoot 24-of-25 from the free throw line. Diggins had the lone miss in 13 attempts from the stripe, and Johnson and Sims were perfect on their six tries.

The score was tied at 60-60 heading into the fourth quarter. The Mercury never trailed in the final period, as Griner scored on a pair of short hooks on their first two possessions.

It was 66-all before Griner hit a pair of free throws with 6:10 to play. The lead hovered between two and six until Diggins drew a foul with 9.9 seconds remaining. The second-year point guard out of Notre Dame made the first to pull Tulsa within one but was off the mark on her second attempt.

Taylor sank two free throws at the other end, and Diggins missed two 3- pointers in the closing seconds.

Diggins finished a forgettable 2-for-17 from the field.
