Mercury bounce back from loss, drop Fever

Aug 3, 2014 - 4:37 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Brittney Griner scored 17 points and the Phoenix Mercury upended the Indiana Fever on Saturday, 79-69, at US Airways Center.

Diana Taurasi and DeWanna Bonner netted 15 and 14 points, respectively, to help the Mercury bounce back from Thursday's loss in Minnesota. Prior to losing to Maya Moore and the defending champion Lynx, Phoenix had won 16 straight games.

The Mercury remain unbeaten at home in 12 contests since a tight loss to San Antonio on May 23.

Indiana got 14 points from Shavonte Zellous off the bench, but star Tamika Catchings missed all 10 of her field goal attempts in the loss. Erlana Larkins grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Phoenix held a narrow 47-42 lead at the break, but Indiana won the third by a point and trailed by just four heading into the final period. Layshia Clarendon's layup a minute and a half into the fourth capped a 6-0 start to the quarter, and the underdog Fever took their biggest lead of the game at 62-60.

Later in the period, Bonner followed a Penny Taylor layup with one of her own to give Phoenix the lead back for good. Taurasi's triple at 3:55 made it 70-63, and the lead was at least seven the rest of the way.
