Mercury crush Sky in record-setting Game 1
Sep 7, 2014 - 10:29 PM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Candice Dupree scored 26 points to lead the Phoenix Mercury to an 83-62 rout of the Chicago Sky in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Sunday.Diana Taurasi deposited 19 points and handed out a playoff career-high 11 assists for the Mercury, who last reached the Finals in 2009 when they defeated the Indiana Fever in five games.
Brittney Griner tallied 12 points with a WNBA-playoff record eight blocks in the win.
The Mercury shot a blistering 58.5 percent from the field, a WNBA Finals record.
Sylvia Fowles' 19 points led Chicago, which is making its first appearance in the Finals in the franchise's history after taking down the Fever in three games to win the Eastern Conference.
It was a slow start to the contest, with Phoenix taking a 15-8 lead after the first quarter. A 12-4 run to begin the second staked the hosts to a 27-12 lead.
The Mercury held the Sky to an opponent season-low for points in the first half in leading 42-20 at the break.
Chicago couldn't make it a game in the second half as the Mercury will look to grab a two-game cushion on Tuesday in Phoenix.
