Penicheiro paces Monarchs in win over Sparks

Jul 25, 2007 - 4:48 AM SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Ticha Penicheiro scored a season-high 19 points as the Sacramento Monarchs posted a 67-59 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday.

Penicheiro, who was averaging just 5.2 points per game in 21 games this season, scored 11 fourth-quarter points to fend off the Sparks as Los Angeles battled back from a 35-25 third-quarter deficit to tie the game at 54-54 at the 4:55 mark of the fourth quarter.

From that point on, the former Old Dominion standout outscored the Sparks herself, 9-5, as the Monarchs avoided losing their fourth straight game for the first time since June 3-10, 2003. With the win, the defending Western Conference champions improved to 8-3 at ARCO Arena.

Nicole Powell added 12 points for Sacramento, which won in spite of shooting just over 36 percent (19-for-52) from the field.

Taj McWilliams-Franklin scored 12 points for Los Angeles, which fell to 1-7 in July.
