Perkins keys late run as Sky rally past Monarchs

Jul 1, 2009 - 3:11 AM CHICAGO(AP) -- Jia Perkins scored eight of her 17 points in the final 90 seconds to help the Chicago Sky rally to beat the Sacramento Monarchs 74-72 on Tuesday night.

Chicago (6-3) trailed 67-62 with 2:41 to play when Candace Dupree started a 9-0 spurt with a two free-throws. She added a jumper seconds later and Perkins followed with a layup for a 68-67 lead.

"We were the aggressor, we were taking it to them while earlier they were taking it to us," Chicago coach Steven Key said. "(And) anytime you can get people to do something spectacular, it raises the level. They're capable of doing it and we just have to make sure we have them out there at the right opportunity to get that done."

The Sky improved to a franchise record 5-0 at home.

Nicole Powell scored 21 to lead the Monarchs, who have lost six straight and slipped to a league-worst 1-8 overall.

"This is only our third game with all our players back," Sacramento coach Jenny Boucek said. "They're getting in shape, they're getting their rhythm. We didn't get the victory tonight, but we're starting to look like ourselves.

"We were in position to win the game and we didn't close it out."

Sylvia Fowles added 14 points and 14 rebounds for Chicago.

Kara Lawson had 11 points for Sacramento.
