Silver Stars-Storm Preview
Jun 19, 2010 - 7:00 PM By MIKE LIPKA STATS WriterSan Antonio (4-6) at Seattle (10-2), 9:00 p.m. EDT
The Seattle Storm have yet to lose at home and they haven't lost anywhere to a Western Conference team, leaving the San Antonio Silver Stars a difficult task as they visit KeyArena on Sunday night.
Seattle (10-2) returns from its road trip as the only West team with a winning record, largely due to its 7-0 record against conference foes.
The Storm also are 6-0 at home, with the last three victories coming in comfortable fashion. In three June home games, Seattle has beaten Atlanta, Phoenix and Los Angeles by an average of 21.0 points.
The Storm's five-game overall winning streak was snapped at Indiana on Thursday, but they beat New York 92-84 the following night to give coach Brian Agler his 100th WNBA victory.
"He's a great coach and he knows a lot about the game," forward Camille Little said. "He loves basketball, period. I'm proud of him and happy that he's doing great."
Agler wasn't thrilled that Seattle allowed 51 second-half points to the Liberty, but his team had more than enough offense to compensate. Sue Bird led the way with 22 points and 10 assists, while three of her teammates added at least 16 points.
"We needed a win," Bird said. "A couple of minutes left we had the lead. It was what were we going to do with it? We had a lot of people in here make big plays."
Center Lauren Jackson posted her fourth double-double with 20 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. Last month, the Silver Stars had no answer for Jackson, who scored 27 points in just over 28 minutes as the Storm cruised to an 84-56 road win.
"We were just outplayed in every aspect of the game," San Antonio coach Sandy Brondello said.
Silver Stars standouts Sophia Young, Chamique Holdsclaw and Becky Hammon were each held to single digits in points by Seattle, but the trio combined for 64 in a 108-105 win at Phoenix on Friday night.
Holdsclaw may be getting comfortable in her first season with San Antonio. She has averaged 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in the last three games, and the Silver Stars (4-6) won two of them to recover from a four-game losing streak.
Young has totaled 49 points in her last two games and Hammon had season highs with 21 points and 10 assists Friday as she continues to recover from a leg injury.
San Antonio, however, has lost its last three visits to KeyArena.
