Hammon leads Silver Stars past Shock

Jul 31, 2010 - 3:48 AM TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Becky Hammon scored 22 points to lead the San Antonio Silvers to a 101-85 victory over the Tulsa Shock on Friday night.

Sophia Young and Edwige Lawson-Wade each had 17 points, Michelle Snow added 14, Chamique Holdsclaw 12 and Roneeka Hodges 11 for the Silver Stars (9-17), who won their second straight.

"The most important thing is we're playing well," Hammon said. "We beat a good team yeterday in Washington and we want to continue to build off that. I've been struggling the last couple of games, so it is nice to get back and get my feet under me a little bit and knock down some shots."

Ivory Latta scored 19 points and Scholanda Robinson added 17 for the Shock (4-21), losers of six straight and 18 of their last 19.

"Latta has played so hard," Shock coach Nolan Richardson said. "She is a warrior, and that's what we needed in our ballgame. She has really upped the team morale, especially since we're not winning, so you better have someone who talks the game differently and she does a great job doing that for us."

The Silver Stars clinched the season series 3-1, with one more meeting on Aug. 13 at San Antonio.

Young scored six points in an 8-0 run that gave the Silver Stars a 47-39 lead at halftime.

Latta hit a 3-pointer to bring the Shock within five points early in the third quarter, but the Silver Stars pulled away again as Roneeka Hodges' 3 gave them a 57-44 lead.

Tulsa closed to within 69-63 late in the third.

Lawson-Wade's 3 capped a 7-0 run and pushed San Antonio's lead to 78-65 with 8:13 left, and the Shock got no closer than nine.

"We actually started off well and they came back, and we gave them too many open 3s," San Antonio coach Sandy Brondello said. "We started to make shots, obviously, and we got some stops without turning the ball over. We shot a high percentage and it hurts the defense of the other team when you shoot a high percentage."

San Antonio shot 63 percent (36 of 57) from the field, including 56 percent (9 of 16) on 3-pointers. Tulsa hit just 46 percent (30 of 66), including 48 percent (10 of 21) on 3s.

Tulsa, which completed its second straight 1-9 month, beat San Antonio on the road two weeks ago for its only win in July. However, the Shock couldn't do it again this time.

Tulsa got off to an 11-4 lead while outrebounding the Silver Stars and scoring off fastbreaks. However, San Antonio bounced back with a 10-2 run of its own.

Rashanda McCants, acquied earlier this week from Minnesota, made her Shock debut and had six points and one rebound.
