Mercury dump road-weary Sparks
Jul 6, 2011 - 3:36 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Candice Dupree and Diana Taurasi each scored 20 points to lead the Phoenix Mercury over the Los Angeles Sparks, 101-82.Penny Taylor added 16 points and Kara Braxton netted 14 for the Mercury, who have won six of seven after losing their first three games of the season.
The Sparks, playing their second game without the injured Candace Parker, were led by Ebony Hoffman's 21 points. Los Angeles has dropped four in a row to open a seven-game road trip.
After trailing 50-42 at halftime, Phoenix erupted for 37 points on 12-of-17 shooting in the third quarter. Dupree led the way with 12 points, and the 79-65 lead was never seriously threatened in the final 10 minutes.
The game turned ugly late in the third quarter when Phoenix guard Ketia Swanier was elbowed in the left eye by Kristi Toliver, who was given a flagrant foul. Swanier was helped to the locker room.
