New coach, same result: Mercury destroy Shock
Jul 11, 2011 - 12:32 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - To say the Tulsa Shock are struggling would be an understatement.With interim head coach Teresa Edwards behind the bench, Tulsa suffered an embarrassing 102-63 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday.
Nolan Richardson stepped down as head coach following Tulsa's 86-78 loss to these Mercury on Friday. Richardson, best known for his relentless defensive teams and the coach of the 1994 NCAA national champion Arkansas Razorbacks, was Tulsa's first coach after the move from Detroit prior to the 2010 campaign.
In his first -- and only -- full season at the helm, the Shock went 6-28. Tulsa is off to a 1-11 start this year.
Penny Taylor scored 18 points for the Mercury, who have won four in a row.
DeWanna Bonner added 13 points off the bench for Phoenix, which shot 59.7 percent from the field. Candice Dupree, Diana Taurasi and Nakia Sanford tallied 12 points apiece.
Tiffany Jackson finished with 19 points for the Shock, who were held to 28 points in the first half. Liz Cambage donated 15 points off the bench.
Tulsa guard Ivory Latta missed her second straight game with a staph infection.
