Dupree hits late jumpers in regulation, overtime in Sky win
Jul 2, 2007 - 4:28 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Candice Dupree scored 24 points as the Chicago Sky posted a 74-71 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday.Dupree nailed a jumper with nine seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 55-55 for the Sky, who have won two straight following three consecutive losses.
With Chicago clinging to 71-69 lead in the extra period, the 6-2 forward hit a runner with 1:28 remaining to give the Sky all the working margin they would need.
Trailing, 56-50, at the 6:54 mark in the fourth quarter following a layup from Los Angeles forward Marta Fernandez, Sky guard Jia Perkins hit a 3-pointer to cap an 8-2 run over the next 2:49 that tied the game at 58-58. Neither team held more than a four-point advantage the rest of the way.
The Sparks are starting to show the effects of their personnel losses, going 2-6 over their last eight games, averaging 72 points per game.
Following the unexpected retirement of leading scorer Chamique Holdsclaw in June, third-leading scorer Taj McWilliams-Franklin was sidelined for the past two games with tendinitis in her right hamstring before playing just 11 minutes in this contest.
Christi Thomas scored 14 points to lead the Sparks, who fell below .500 (7-8) for the first time this season.
