Shock tie franchise points record in win over Mercury

Jul 9, 2007 - 1:17 AM AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Katie Smith scored 20 points to lead six players in double figures for the Detroit Shock, who tied a franchise record for points in a 111-82 victory over the Phoenix Mercury.

The Mercury held a 41-39 lead at the half before the Shock set a WNBA-record with a blistering 40-point third quarter.

Smith nailed a 3-pointer with 6:13 remaining in the third which sparked a 19-0 run over the next three minutes. Phoenix would never recover.

Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter combined for 15 points on 7-of-27 shooting for the Mercury, who shot just 38 percent (31-of-81) from the field.

Detroit dominated the glass, building up a 55-26 rebounding advantage en route to 40 points in the paint. Plenette Pierson led the squad with 14 rebounds and Swin Cash and Cheryl Ford pulled down 10 apiece for the defending WNBA champions.

Tangela Smith led Phoenix with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
