Douglas lifts Sun over Liberty
Jul 30, 2007 - 1:27 AM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Katie Douglas scored 26 points, including the go-ahead basket with under four minutes remaining in the game, to lead the Connecticut Sun to its eighth win in the last nine games, 67-61 over the New York Liberty on Sunday.With 3:52 to play, Douglas drove to the basket and hit a driving layup as she was fouled by Janel McCarville.
Douglas made the subsequent free throw to complete the three-point play and give the Sun the lead for good, 57-55.
Lindsay Whalen added a layup with just over three minutes left before a basket by Janel McCarville cut the Sun's lead to 59-57.
Evanthia Maltsi buried a 3-pointer from the right side with 2:50 left but McCarville hit a layup 16 seconds later to pull the Liberty within 62-59.
New York got no closer as Douglas made it 64-59 with 1:25 left.
McCarville hit a layup with 21 seconds left to make it 65-61, but Douglas was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and made both free throws to cap the scoring.
McCarville scored 18 points for the Liberty, who fell into a tie with the Washington Mystics for last place in the Eastern Conference at 10-14 and have dropped six straight.
The win puts the Sun (14-12) two games behind the Indiana Fever for third place in the East.
